Did you know?

Get Hooked on Fishing is now in its 18th year! From its early beginnings in the North East of England, the charity has grown and now has Projects and Project Associates across the UK. That is a major achievement!

So, what does GHoF do?

It’s probably easiest to start with what we don’t do. We don’t ‘just take kids fishing’. As a charity, we’re not allowed to just do that.

We are regulated by the Charity Commission in England and Wales and by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator in Scotland and as such, we have to demonstrate that we provide a public benefit. Each year we have to report publicly how we’ve achieved that charitable purpose.

So, what do we do? What we call our ‘Monday to Friday work’ is with schools, pupil referral units, community groups, etc. This activity is very much about improving the life chances of young people and those facing challenging circumstances. We use the skills developed through fishing to create new opportunities for our clients. For some this can be life-changing!

These sessions and programmes are offered free of charge to our clients with the inevitable costs being met in a variety of different ways.

You’ll probably have seen that we are very active across social media but often, due to the circumstances of our clients, we’re not able to promote this area of our work with photographs. I’m sure our friends and followers will understand why but in future blogs we plan to highlight a few of our real success stories.

Our ‘Saturday and Sunday work’ revolves around working with the wider public, those who would like to try fishing but don’t know how to. At weekends and during school holidays, our projects run low-cost ‘Have a go!’ sessions. These are led by our staff and volunteers and all take place at fisheries with good facilities. We try to show that fishing is simple, fun, safe and affordable. Our aim is to ensure that our visitors can become independent anglers, know where to go, have someone to go with and know who to ask for accurate advice.

We also work in partnership with the Angling Trust to run the national ‘Family Fishing’ campaign. These community days are free of charge, short sessions intended to introduce families to fishing and to help them try it again. We also run these activities at a number of national events both indoors and outdoors.

During the year, you will find us at:

· The Northern Angling Show in Manchester in Spring

· The Big One Show in Farnborough in Spring

· Glasgow Angling Centre’s Open Weekends in Spring and Autumn

· Edinburgh Angling Centre’s Open Weekend in Summer

· The BBC Countryfile Live show at Blenheim Palace in Summer

Our priorities for 2018.

We want to have a greater public awareness of the magnificent work our charity does and from that, really see an increase the following:

Volunteers – both anglers and non-anglers! Our ‘Have a Go!’ sessions and ‘Family Fishing’ days are most successful when we have lots of people helping us. That can be from making refreshments and booking visitors in to helping people catch their first fish!

Donations – these help us do so much more and it couldn’t be easier! GHoF is a charity and therefore non-profit making, we do however have significant costs and donations enable us to offer our activities free of charge or at very low cost. E-mail hello@ghof.org.uk for more information about making a donation. In future blogs, we’ll describe some of the ways you could help us with this and what your donation actually provides!

We’ll also be posting a blog which will introduce you to our amazing team of staff and volunteers. We couldn’t do it without them!
