1. Keep it legal! Of course, under-12s don't need an Environment Agency Rod Licence, but 12 to 16 year-old's do need to register for their free one. For 17's and over, it's as little as £6 for a day licence and very easy to purchase at the Post Office or here https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/buy-a-fishing-licence
2. Where? We'd recommend choosing a venue where you can easily sit together with good facilities, a toilet is a minimum, and a cafe could be a real bonus!
3. When? Short sessions, just an hour or two, are a perfect way to start someone off and leave them wanting more. In fact, we can't think of a better way to spend a summer evening where they'll be 'fresh-air' tired and ready for bed and fishy dreams!
4. What? We're always mindful that most beginners have rarely seen a live fish larger than one in a goldfish bowl! Choose a venue and bait that will guarantee plenty of silvers - great fun!
5. Whether the weather be.... We would recommend keeping an eye on the weather when choosing your day. A day that's going to be too hot, cold, wet or windy can dampen spirits and not make for the greatest of introductions to the wonders of fishing!
6. How? KISS - keep it simple sir....or madam! Using very simple fishing tackle and bait is a must, it's less intimidating. Showing a beginner the simplicity and affordability of fishing will keep them interested. We all know of course, that if they get into fishing, they will want to try, and buy, more advanced gear!
7. Who? Remember who is going fishing. We really would recommend that you leave your gear at home for another day. By concentrating on helping your guest and not fishing yourself, you'll make sure they have a great experience!
8. Be prepared! There'll be lots of tangles and snags as well as questions and laughter! Taking plenty of refreshments, handgel and sunscreen will make for a very comfortable session and we always have a spare pair of polarised sunglasses to hand. They're great fun for watching the life under the water even if you're not catching!
9. Why? Enjoyment! Most anglers you chat with will tell you that they get as much pleasure from helping someone catch their fish as they do from going fishing themselves. We've experienced this many, many times and know it to be true. Fishing is unlike many other sports and pastimes, you really can have a great shared experience.
10. And finally.... Check the internet and social media for other opportunities in your area. Try one of Get Hooked on Fishing's free 'Family Fishing' events over the summer or take a look at the Angling Trust's website, www.getfishing.org.uk for free and affordable events and sessions that are perfect for beginners.
Tight lines!
